How do you program the garage door remote to an old Sears unit?

I have a better life Sears 1 / 2 hp garage door opener and a control Remote not seem to match. The exterior of the unit does not appear to have any pins or adjustments and I'm afraid to open the unit by removing 6-8 screws (also of the unity does not seem to be super safe on the roof). Is there another way to reprogram the remote control unit of this age?

The unit must be held by the transport / Lag bolts, screws not cover, so you should be able to remove the cover, no problem. In fact, I would do anyway to make sure everything is more tight and lubricated, depending on whether the mounting bolts are external (usually the top front, on the screw of the unit / chain) or internal (via bolted to a beam). Within the outer case will the DIP switch to set the code. The remote can be shot, too. Did you replace the batteries? Do you have an LED that flashes when you press the button? Are the battery connections corroded? If you can get a model number off the motor housing, is likely that Google would the owner manual.
